So yeah. American Horror Story. I noticed that this was broadcasting last Fall because the Diner we would do our Post Haunt Debriefing in had FX on. I just recently watched the entire first season in 2 or 3 sittings and wondered how the heck I could have missed it when it first ran.
I highly recommend this if you like horror. If you don’t like horror, run away. Seriously. Because it’s well done. SRS LEGIT, GUYS.
There are very many archetypical scary icons that appear in horror and at Halloween events. AHS is the first time I have ever seen some of them done right. For example, a scary surgeon from the past. I have seen this archetype appear at many Halloween events but he never ends up being scary. IN AHS HE IS, THOUGH.
It’s not a perfect metaphor because AHS does focus on a couple of main characters throughout the run, but it reminded me a tiny bit of of Rome: Open City. Rome: Open city focuses on the story of the city rather than the characters. AHS’s strongest point is the fact that it’s as if you took these Halloween archetypes and put them into The Sims or World of Warcraft and let them develop. The world that is built here is tangible. (That’s really the only thing I saw that made it remind me of R:OC, but hey, I learned something in Film Class…)
The story is slowly revealed to you at the same time new things are happening. Silent Hill fans will love this so much.
The only thing I know for sure is that there is no way that I’d have stayed in the house as long as these people did, and I can’t wait for season 2. Holy crap.
