My last day at my old job
You might recall that I recently got laid off.
In less than 2 weeks I managed to find a swank job that pays more. :D The funny thing is that I got the phone call on the Friday of Intervention - right when we were setting up. This was probably the most stressful day for me. I was told that I had to do a phone interview that day in less than 3 hours from that time! I did the interview and I thought that I was incoherent from stress and lack of sleep, but I got an in-person interview that week.
I was hired on the spot!
New job = new haircut!
I can’t tell you where I am working, of course, but I can hint to you that I am now working on a very high-profile bit of technology that you see every day.
Today is my last day at my old job. You might think that in this case I shouldn’t care. I don’t look at it that way. The reason I have gotten to where I am today is because I take my work seriously, never steal or do anything bad, and always treat everyone with respect.
I had a boss a long time ago who screamed at me right in my face for things that were not my fault. I still kept composed during that and ended up getting a better job because of that.
Marketing yourself at your day job is the same as marketing independent comics or music. My “marketing gimmick” is that I do a great job, always meet my deadlines, and have a crazy amount of tech knowledge that I can put into plain English for people.
Suit guys often decry the arts as a useless expense, but the fact that I am so involved with independent art and nerdstuffs is one of the main reasons I have never had a problem with being unemployed. I understand how to communicate verbally and visually. I have been told by hiring managers that this is rare in my field.
Yay for art and yay for being professional! My advice to young creatives is to work hard on your craft, never be anything less than professional, and always go for your dreams! I have to work a day job because I had tough circumstances in college – but I will never let that do anything but make me a better person. :D
