The Most Underrated Sci-Fi Show on TV: Being Erica

Being Erica is one of my favorite shows right now. It is a Canadian production about a single girl whose life is going nowhere. She made bad choices which lead to dead end jobs and a bad social life. She meets a “therapist” named Dr. Tom. He gives her the ability to go back in time and redo things in her life.

At first I was not sure I would like this show. I watched a few episodes and was hooked. I am glad I gave it a chance. Now Harknell and I watch it together when it airs. Season 1 is rather straightforward after it gains momentum. Season 2 introduced all kinds of crazy Sci-fi elements. It goes off the charts. I REALLY HOPE it gets a season 3. This show is one part Daria, two parts sci-fi, one part disillusioned girl’s life. This is the most unique and best show I have seen in a long time.

You need to watch this show. It’s deceptive packaging ensures that it will stay on the underground unless people get the word out.

The problem with this show (if there is one) is that it lives between 2 demographics. The show is about a girl’s life, so it seems to be like a Chick Flick at first. It is actually airing on SOAPnet in the USA right between the Soap Operas. This show is girly enough to turn off the stereotypical “girls have cooties” male Sci-Fi fans but it’s too Sci-Fi for your average Soccer Mom.

If you are anything like Harknell and I, you will probably like this show. Erica is funny, sarcastic, and a very refreshing breath of fresh air in a world where female protagonists are generally expected to just talk about their designer handbags. It’s like I’ve found Daria a few years later with time travel.

Here is a trailer:

Here are one of their video blogs they put up to promote the series:
