Dark Floors, The Lordi Motion Picture has finally been released in the USA. (Thanks Terence for the heads up!) Of course, I ran out and got my copy immediately.
This film stars Skye Bennett as a young autistic girl who has been hospitalized with an unknown condition. Her father is played by Noah Huntley who you may have seen in 28 Days Later.
After a mishap where the MRI machine catches on fire, the girl’s father decided to take her from the hospital. One of her attending doctors (Played by Dominique McElligott) urges him to stop because without her medicine, she may have a seizure.
They enter an elevator with a scraggly-looking old man, security guard, and a short-tempered businessman. At this point weird things start happening as the monsters from the band Lordi attack them.
I felt that the few reviews I could find of this film treated it unfairly due to Lordi being a metal band. Apparently everything has to be SERIOUS BUSINESS these days, including our music. Oh no! How dare a band wear fun costumes? Really, people need to chill out.
I enjoyed this film for the most part. It was immaculately shot. I do however have to say that the plot is another matter. You never are given the reason for the monsters attacks. The description of the film says that the little girl may be the group’s only way out…but that just seemed to be the default..there wasn’t much in the way of clues to tell anyone that. She drew pictures of what was going to happen, but that was it.
I enjoyed the ride, but I still don’t know what the film was about. The two main male and female characters were supposed to have a crush on each other, I think…but the characters aren’t really developed enough to give the audience that emotional attachment. You don’t exactly care who lives or dies. At the end, there is a cryptic conversation with Lordi and the little girl that doesn’t really shed any light on it.
Does anyone out there have an idea about what was supposed to happen here?
In closing, this was a great visual film with some kick ass zombies and monsters, but don’t expect to find anything out about why things are happening. If you are not a Lordi fan and just like horror, get this for your next party and watch it with your friends. If you are a Lordi fan, get it when you get your next paycheck!
…If you like romantic comedies, don’t get this film… :D
I hope there will be a sequel because I will be first in line to see it. Because of the vagueness, I sadly must give it 3 Onezumi heads and hope that Mr. Lordi doesn’t disembowel me when I see him live on his next tour:
