 Ego Likeness – Blasphemous Horrors

For those of you who are fans of the spooky Lovecraftian stuff you see in my comic, you might like this stompy darkwave band and their related artwork. Here is an excerpt from their newest project with Weird Tales:

Every once in a while, you stumble across a kindred spirit. A strange, twisted, perfectly demented kindred spirit. Here at Weird Tales we had that pleasure this March, when we met the musical ensemble Ego Likeness: an electronic dark-rock duo out of Baltimore comprising vocalist/lyricist Donna Lynch, who has a second life as a weird horror novelist, and composer/instrumentalist Steven Archer, whose second medium is visual art. Archer had just decided to dive into a challenging new project: producing an original piece of Lovecraft Mythos-inspired artwork every single day for an entire year. When he showed us the first batch he’d completed, we were more than excited — a major new artistic force was about to hit Cthulhu culture, and we knew the Weird Tales community had to see this stuff first.

Here is what Ego Likeness sounds like:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Review

No spoilers, just generic citations.

I loved Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I would see it again and will buy it on DVD. If you like Indy, I suggest you see it now. Crystal Skull was the best movie I have seen in a long time. As a final installment of a very popular trilogy it gave the fans the action, humor, and all-important closure they wanted. They didn’t screw it up.

I felt that the treatment of Marion was great. In Last Crusade, I didn’t like how they changed Marcus Brody’s personality to be wacky. Nothing like that happened here. Marion was written as you remember her. The kid wasn’t played for laughs – he was very likable. You will find no trace of the annoying Short Round and shrieking Willi humor that you saw in Temple of Doom and no personality changes like in Last Crusade. Harrison Ford’s age did not detract from this film at all. They used it the right way.

Will you like this film? It depends on your approach. I feel that the people that don’t like this film are judging it unfairly as if it is supposed to be something it is not. If they judged the previous 3 films with the same ruler, they’d probably have issue with all of them. I’ll talk a bit about the criticism and tell you why I disagree with it:

1. People “don’t buy” the plot and find supernatural things far-fetched -
What about a face-melting ark, magical stones, and a life-giving Holy Grail is NOT far-fetched?

2. The ending was weird – Without telling you the ending I can say I liked it OK. Judging from all that has been written on the Indyverse as well as the Fate of Atlantis game, in my opinion it fits. Indy has never shied away from these types of things and hints toward it have been placed as easter eggs throughout older Indy writings and games. Is it the fact that the ending wasn’t related to religion what threw people off?

We can’t have Jesus Magic all the time. I saw it as just an extrapolation of the universe. I kept thinking how happy I was that this neglected element was taken into account. We never saw a film version of Sophia Hapgood, but I’ll take this.

3. People say the dialogue is ” corny” - Indy films are parodies of old serials and wartime comics. The people who slam the film based on it’s dialogue must have missed that boat. When Indy overstates ” Because she wasn’t you, honey!” at the end I nearly died from awesome.

4. People claimed they didn’t enjoy it as much as they did when they were 10 - Too many people are too serious. You aren’t 10 anymore and you’d likely feel similar about Raiders if you watched it with this same outlook.

5. People claim the action scenes were long and that the film didn’t flow – This is probably a matter of personal preference. I loved it because I wanted an awesome finale and I got one. The scenes were well shot, engaging, and often funny. They did cram a lot in and I’d probably have to watch it again to get it all, but it worked for me. It kicked some ass.

In conclusion, I give this 5 Onezumi heads. Best EVAR:

Also, I dislike theaters and always wait for DVD. It should be noted that no other film could make me do this:

I’m a 1, 4, 3, 2. Harknell is a 1, 4, 2, 3. How do you rank the films? What is your Indy number?
